Background
As an active development agency, UNDP produces knowledge and communications products and publications on a regular basis. A significant requirement for this is high-quality photo and video content, documenting the people, results and activities carried out by UNDP Sudan and its projects.
Photos and videos are expected to be used for key products; a photo archive, short documentaries (1-3 minutes each), and an in-house gallery. Further, photos and documentaries are expected to be exhibited on UNDP public events, UNDP web posting, social media, and print publications, etc.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the guidance of the Head of Communications of UNDP Sudan Country Office in Khartoum, the Consultant (IC) is to produce a package of photographs and video clips on an as-needs basis to document UNDP work, activities, and events. Most importantly, the Consultant is to produce images demonstrating results and success stories of UNDP work in the country. The photographs and images should tell a story which emphasizes UNDP contribution to the country’s efforts to promote growth and development.
Whenever possible, the photographs and images should highlight the achievements and impact of UNDP work by illustrative BEFORE and AFTER images, telling the country’s development story by using compelling images focusing on people and communities.
The Consultant (IC) will work on a needs basis to produce a series of still photographs illustrating the topic as described above. All material should reveal work that is a direct result of UNDP funding, programs, and projects — which will be provided to the Consultant (IC) or arranged for him / her at the field level.
Specific activities include:
- Extensive field visits, filming, and photo shooting, including basic audio-capture for interviews.
- In compliance with UNDP External Consultant Guidelines, editing (in Photoshop) and providing high-resolution images in high- and low-resolution JPEG, and RAW format, providing delivery via electronic methods
- In compliance with UNDP External Videographer Guidelines, providing high-resolution video footage, including scene setting footage, interviews, activity/actions
- Capturing biographical/basic data of key people photographed and interviewed, and on request, undertaking short interviews (written answers and/or video, generally support by a UNDP Sudan staff member)
- Submitting all material with basic captions/descriptions, including location, date, activity underway etc.
Copyright
- Image acquisition includes reproduction rights for non-exclusive world rights in perpetuity;
- Before Photographer/Videographer moves any photo on the wire or uploads it to an online Image Database as a photo essay or extended photo caption story, he/she should contact UNDP to obtain consent;
- UNDP can provide the image(s) and video(s) to other UN organizations or the media at no cost, as is the practice.

Competencies
Photographer
- Take high-resolution photographs (and provide basic info on where and when photos are taken, in line with Description of duties);
- Select best photographs related to each task (no less than 30) in consultation with UNDP Communications Unit;
- Photographs shall be provided in raw format and optimized resolution to UNDP on external memory medium or via file transfer service;
- Photographs must be provided in high quality suitable for printing, processing or publishing on web;
- Work in close cooperation with and report to the UNDP Communications Unit.
Videographer
- Record and produce HD videos (A and B-roll) in English and local languages to document events, activities and interview key, staff/partners/beneficiaries per request of UNDP to ensure capturing of UNDP’s activities in video format;
- Record and edit narration / voice over where needed in according with guidance from UNDP Communications Unit;
- Export and deliver audio track of videos per request of UNDP;
- Embed sub-titles video as per the need;
- Edit videos and basic graphic animation as per request of UNDP Communications Unit;
- Videos shall be produced in a high-quality broadcasting and web publishing format;
- Export final version of a video in formats optimized for HD web distribution and TV broadcast and deliver to UNDP;
- Videos shall be provided in raw format and optimized resolution to UNDP on external memory medium or via file transfer service;
- Work in close cooperation with and report to the UNDP Communications Unit.

Required Skills and Experience
Education:
- B.SC. degree in communications, journalism, arts, photography, media or other related areas.
- Formal training in still photography
Experience:
- At least five years’ work experience in photography and filming in social/development area, Experience in either national or international organization in dealing with private sector and / or experience in working with international organizations is highly desired
- Proven ability in photography and filming ability to assimilate and communicate complex visual messages in an engaging and user-friendly manner
- Advanced knowledge and skills of MS Office, including Adobe Photoshop and other editing tools Photoshop is required.
- Provision of portfolio items of previous work, which demonstrate the applicant’s artistic abilities, attention to detail and familiarity with new technology, will also be an asset.
Language Requirements:
- Fluency in Arabic. Knowledge of English will be an asset.
Other Required Skills:
- Knowledge and understanding of the development sector
- Previous experience of working with UN agencies, NGOs and INGOs
- Availability and willingness to travel to remote areas of Sudan
- Ability to work in close coordination with other team members
- Has excellent interpersonal skills that allow good engagement at the corporate and community level
- Ability to work long hours in a complex operating environment.
