Background

OCHA – SHF wants to hire a professional freelance photographer as soon as possible to improve visibility of the SHF humanitarian projects.

Travel location: Throughout Sudan where the Sudan Humanitarian Fund is supporting implementation of response activities.

Reporting Relationships

With guidance from the Sudan Humanitarian Fund Programme staff, the Consultant will work under the direct supervision of the Communication and Compliance Officer. The SHF is managed by the Head of the Humanitarian Finance and Resource Mobilization section.

Tasks

The consultant will produce high-resolution images of the utmost technical quality and aesthetic calibre for inclusion in a broad variety of SHF and OCHA products, as well as dissemination to media outlets and partner organizations.

The photographs will highlight the resilience of people portrayed, in particular:

  • women and girls and vulnerable groups, including the elderly and people with disabilities, in priority.
  • local humanitarian responders: whether local organizations or communities themselves.
  • Highlighting the work of SHF staff, and giving OCHA visibility, is also desired.

The pictures should focus on the following:

  • Project implementation (teacher in front of class, nurse, seed market, rehabilitation works supported by the SHF)
  • The beneficiaries attending project activities (action scenes), or using the services they were provided (farmer implementing new skills, person using water pump, people living in new shelter…)
  • The impact of the project (people being happy, successful harvest, etc).

Other points of attention:

  • Capture images in a variety of moods, ranging from light-hearted to serious.
  • Alternate between portrait and landscape options to facilitate intended diverse use of the photographs
  • “Portraits”: posed and spontaneous photographs of the profiled subject(s) taken from a variety of situations and distances. Mix of full-body, three-quarter length, and headshots.
  • In all photographs, please make sure that enough details about the lives of the photo subjects are captured to make them relatable to the people viewing the photographs later.
  • Emotional content resonates well with audiences and promotes further sharing.
  • There should be a mix of eyes-to-camera and looking out of frame images.
  • Environmental portraits show the individual in the context of their environment and are generally taken with a wider angle of view.
  • The environmental photos should represent a variety of assistance interventions supported by the Sudan Humanitarian Fund. Some examples include; affected people fetching water from a rehabilitated borehole- capture the person (s) fetching water, the taps and the where feasible storage tanks. Another scene could be women attending ante-natal clinic- waiting outside and with the doctor- with consideration of what is acceptable and observing their privacy.

Methodology

The consultant will travel along, upon invitation by OCHA, with an SHF monitoring mission. The photographer will have to follow the schedule of the mission. During days where the monitoring mission has meetings in the state capital (not visiting projects), the photographer should join SHF implementing partners to the field to take pictures.

OCHA will inform the consultant as soon as possible on the trip to which it requires a photographer, and not later than a week before the first day of the trip. The consultant will then be required to provide the outputs discussed in this ToR, for this trip.
