DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The position is located in the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS). The position is based in El Fasher and is located in the office of the PCC Chair. The Associate Interpreter/Translator reports to the PCC Chair.
Responsibilities:
Within the delegated authority, the Associate Translator / Interpreter will be responsible for the following duties:
• Provides clear and concise verbal communication/interpretation, interfacing between the mission’s representative and local population in support of operations and wider mission activities.
• Translates from local language(s) to designated UN working language(s), subject to revision, a variety of texts covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, i.e., political, social, legal, economic, financial, administrative, scientific and technical; respecting deadlines and using appropriate terminology;
• Travels with PCC staff on their missions to the field for interpretation and other assistance, as needed.
• Assists in matters of terminology and style to ensure uniformity and quality.
• Resolves translation/editorial issues (i.e., clarification on ambiguities, technical meanings, etc.) through consultation with authors.
• Aims at high standard of accuracy, consistency and fidelity to the spirit, style and nuances of the original.
• Observes the established terminology and usage and ensures, as far as possible, consistency with other translators working on similar documents.
• Uses all sources of reference, information, and consultation relevant to the text at hand and carries out any research required.
• Maintains a certain speed and volume of output, taking into account the difficulty of the text and the specified deadlines.
• Identifies new terminology material for the consideration of revisers and terminology managers.
• Keeps abreast of media news and briefs supervisors and colleagues of relevant contents.
• Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Translation, Interpretation, law or any relevant subject is required.
A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience:
A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in providing interpretation and translation services. Experience working with unformed personnel is desirable, experience working with the United Nations is desirable.
Languages: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Fluency in Arabic is required. Knowledge of other United Nations language is desirable.

Assessment:
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include a written assessment followed by a competency-based interview.
