The position is located in the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS). The United Nations Security Council adopted resolution 2524 (2020) authorizing the mandate of UNITAMS which is to assist the political transition, progress towards democratic governance, in the protection and promotion of human rights, and sustainable peace; support peace processes and implementation of future peace agreements; assist peacebuilding, civilian protection and rule of law, in particular in Blue Nile and South Kordofan (the Two Areas) and Darfur; and support the mobilisation of economic and development assistance and coordination of humanitarian assistance.
The position is based in El Fasher and is located in the Mission Support in El Fasher (Darfur Hub)/Medical Services. The incumbent will report to the Chief of Mission Support.

Within delegated authority, the Medical Officer at this level will be responsible for the following duties:
Medical Administrative Duties:
•Refers staff to outside specialists as necessary.
•Follows-up with outside specialists.
•Provides health education and health promotion programs.
•Participates in addressing work environment and occupational health issues.
•Liaises with UN-Military Medical Units in the mission and host-nation medical facilities.
•Follows the United Nations established policies and procedures regarding medical clearances, sick leave and medical evacuations/repatriations.
•Participates in drafting and implementation of business continuity and crises preparedness plans for the duty station/mission.
•Manages day-to-day mission medical support operations by ensuring availability of medical supplies and proper functioning of medical equipment.
•Ensures appropriate training programs are implemented in order to maintain and develop the medical capabilities (e.g. health education, HIV/AIDS prevention, first aid and CPR).
•Performs other related duties as required.
Professionalism: Knowledge of clinical, occupational and tropical/travel medicine. Training in CPR and ACLS or equivalent emergency medical care and capacity to manage and use medical equipment such as Ventilator, ECG Machine, Multiparameter Monitor, Ultrasound Machines, and ability to read Xray films. Currently registered to practice medicine in own country or another UN member state, is required. Doctorate in Medicine (MD) or equivalent in medicine; residency in Family medicine, Internal Medicine or Emergency Medicine; qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of residency.
Training and experience in Tropical Medicine, is highly desirable.
A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible clinical experience in one of the areas of medicine, is required.
A minimum of three (3) years of progressive experience in clinical medicine, and medical administration is required.
Experience in emergency medicine is desirable.
Experience in the United Nations system or a comparable international organization is desirable.
Experience in handling complex organizational issues at local and international level is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.

The selected candidate will be expected to deploy in time to commence work no sooner than 1 January 2021.
