Org. Setting and Reporting
The position is located in the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS).
The United Nations Security Council adopted resolution 2524 (2020) authorizing the mandate of UNITAMS, which is to assist the political transition, progress towards democratic governance, protection and promotion of human rights and sustainable peace; support peace processes and the implementation of future peace agreements, assist peacebuilding, civilian protection and rule of law, in particular in Blue Nile and South Kordofan (the Two Areas) and Darfur; and support the mobilization of economic and development assistance and the coordination of humanitarian assistance.
The position is based in Khartoum, Sudan and is located in the Political Support Section. The incumbent will report to the Senior Political Affairs Officer.
Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
Political Analysis and Advice
– Identify, analyze and monitor political developments, trends and emerging issues in the country or region assigned, according to UNITAMS mandate, including monitoring and analyzing the progress related to peace and reconciliation.
– Build collaborative relations with political parties, civil society actors, armed movement representatives, academic and research institutions, national interlocutors, other Sudanese stakeholders and representatives of the international community.
– Assess implications and make recommendations to senior management on possible policies, strategies and other measures to address issues of concern and to advance mandated objectives.
Reporting and Information Management
– Prepare draft summary and analytical reports including, but not limited to, situation reports, briefing notes, options papers, code cables and input for the reports of the Secretary-General to the Security Council, General Assembly or other bodies.
-Establish a monitoring and evaluation framework to evaluate impact of local peace initiatives.
– Prepare contextual information materials, such as background notes, political profiles and databases of relevance to the assigned portfolio; Manage information to ensure its accessibility and utility.
Planning, Coordination and Facilitation
-Support relationships with UN Common System colleagues and counterparts, Government representatives, civil society actors, academic and research institutions, and other national and international partners on information-sharing, policy and coordination matters.
– Consult and cooperate with partners to develop strategies and plans of action to address political challenges, in pursuit of shared objectives;
– Support preparations for official meetings, events and visits, including through drafting talking points and background papers; Participate in fact-finding –and other missions; Prepare written summaries of meetings/visits and assist with follow-up activities, as appropriate.
– Contribute to the formulation and implementation of the unit’s programme of work.
– Support planning and budgetary processes for current and future field operations as required, including management of Local Piece Initiatives and other extra-budgetary activities.
– Support the draft and implementation of LPIs guidelines.
– Perform other related duties as required.

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in political science, political economy, international relations, social sciences, law, public administration, or related field. A first level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political or International affairs, diplomacy, conflict resolution, or related field is required.
Experience in political outreach, facilitation, analysis, advice and reporting is required.
Experience working with conflict mapping and analysis is desirable.
Experience working in local conflict-resolution and mediation is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
